Have you ever heard about teen gang? It is one of the things that can greatly increasing the teenager’s changes. Involving in gangs is just the same as involving in teen violence. Nowadays, many teenagers involve in gangs, and these gangs are not shy to recruit teenagers become their members. Besides, teen gangs have a sign or a symbol and claim certain areas as their territories; moreover, they commonly have rival and fight each other. It would be increasing crime activities for the youth age. Parents and related institutions which handled this problem is not sufficiently able to cope these gang activities. While there are many ways to control teen gang activities, it is possible to identify three effective ways to control it. Parents and related institutions can control teen gang activity by combining approach of the supervised youth program, providing gang prevention classes to student, and having closer family relationship.
The first way to control teen gang activity is combining approach of the supervised youth program. Controlling gang activity involves many people and organization. It is a hard work, but sharing responsibilities mean less of work for each person, social institution, and organization. If each component of the community participates, it is expected the new hope arises. The program will focus on skill development for teenagers. The instructors will train the teenager’s art and music skills, such as teaching them to play guitar and drum for developing their music skills, and teaching them to paint and create an artistic product. Besides, the program will also teach teenager the basic work skill. The basic work skill likes computer skill and basic management skill. These skills will be needed later when they want to find a job. The skills which are taught in this program are expected to help teenager to divert their minds of the things that it will harm themselves. So, they can stay away from things that it is related with gang.
The second way to control teen gang activity is providing gang prevention classes to teenage students. Schools take an important role in addressing the gang problems. Schools should hold counseling class of the bad effect from involving with gang. Students are given the guidance of the dangers when they involved with gang. For example, if they involved with gang, they would commit crime activities, such as stealing, injuring and even killing people. Next, students are shown dead end future of being involve in gang. Involving gang is just the same as involving in crime activities, that is why the teenagers who involved in gang have a bleak future. When they join with gangs, they commit to live of crime and violence, gain instant enemy, will not do well in school. So being in gang will end in prison or die in young age. These counseling program hope to help control teen gangs.
The third way to control teen gang is to have closer family relationship. Teenage years are termed as one of the most difficult phases for parents. When they are teenagers, there are many changes through both emotionally and psychically. The truth, parenting teenager is not an easy task, but blaming these youngster is not the solution. Creating a meaningful close relationship with teenagers begins from the moment when they were born. Parents have to spend time together with their teenage children, such as parents have to talk to teenager and answer all their questions, not just ask about difficult subjects, but get to know and discuss all kinds of things. Parents also have to listen to their teenage children and do not feel compelled to hand out advice; moreover, teenager sometimes just need someone to listen. Next, parents have to develop a healthy environment in family. Parents have the main role to create their children personality. If they want their children having good personality, they have to teach them in the right way. This is a common phenomenon, and it depends on the parents to handle their teenager with care and caution. So, teenagers will feel comfortable in the middle of their family, and they will not fall into gang.
As we know parenting teenager is not an easy task if teenager involved into crime activity or teen gang activity. It will be hard to return them to the former condition. To solve this problem, parents and related institutions should take a serious action. Responsibility is not only for the parents, but also the related institutions such as school, government, and social environment. Parents and related institutions have to concern with teenager. For related institutions, they provide youth program which consist skill development and basic work skill. Parents have to close family relationship and have spent time together with their children. It is important to remember that teenagers are on the edge of adulthood and what happened now has a deep impact on the rest of their lives. Parents and related institutions have to handle teenager’s problems with care and caution, so they will not involve in teen gang.
